Happy Holidays!
I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas! Mike and I enjoyed celebrating our first Christmas yesterday, though we have yet to figure out the finer nuances of juggling essentially four families.
Christmas Eve we went to church at Calvary, which was nice because even though its not our normal church, we saw a bunch of people we knew and of course we were able to sit with Mike’s family, so that was nice. Afterward, we went to my mom’s for dinner and dessert. The best part of the night, though was when we got home and opened one of our presents! I got some PJs (which is my favorite thing to get on Christmas eve) and Mike opened Guitar Hero World Tour.
Christmas Day we woke up and went downstairs to open our presents to each other. The highlights were an iPod shuffle for me and Resistence 2 for Mike. Around 10, we headed to Mike’s parents house for breakfast and more presents there! It was great to spend Christmas with so many people since I’m used to very small Christmas celebrations. We especially enjoyed watching Mike’s niece, Brianna, enjoy the day. That afternoon we went over to my mom’s house to spend some time with her. Mike was very excited to get a sleeping bag that he’d been wanting and I got a bunch of work clothes. Finally, that evening we went to my dad’s for dinner. The prime rib was delicious and we did the final gift exchange of the day. By the time we got home we were totally exhausted. By the time we unloaded the car, I only had enough energy to stare blankly at the television in a Christmas coma.
Today I’m at work, sadly, and Mike is at home playing with his video games and such that he got. This weekend we plan to spend time with some friends that are in town for the holiday and hopefully get some rest to recover from the season :)

Our Christmas Letter
Seasons Greetings!
We hope this letter reaches you well and that the Lord is blessing you abundantly this holiday season. For me and Mike, 2008 was an exciting year full of changes and new beginnings.
Our 9-month engagement leading up to the wedding in March was harried and stressful, but culminated in one absolutely amazing day. Mike and I were married on March 1st, in a perfect Colorado setting. It was such a gorgeous day, in fact, that a reporter from the CU campus newspaper put our picture in the paper alongside a story about the unseasonably good weather for March! The wedding itself was more fun than we could have possibly imagined—we enjoyed ourselves immensely as we danced the night away surrounded by loving friends and family. Of course, looking back we both wish we had more time to spend with those of you we hadn’t seen in so long, but were honored that we got to share our big day with you! All in all it was a great night that we will always remember fondly. After spending the wedding night at Boulder’s new St. Julien hotel, we left the following Monday for a nine-day honeymoon in Costa Rica!
Costa Rica was amazing. We would very highly recommend visiting if you haven’t been already. The scenery was gorgeous, the people were friendly, and the diversity of the landscape is unbelievable. We stayed in four different places while we were there: In the capital city of San Jose, on the beach by the Pacific Ocean, at the base of the most active volcano in Costa Rica, and in the middle of the lush rainforest. Our room by the ocean even came with our own butler and our rainforest room had a balcony overlooking the rainforest canopy, two private hot tubs, and our own waterfall in the bathroom—beautiful! We couldn’t have asked for a better honeymoon!
However, we eventually had to transition back to real life. . . so when we got back we returned to our home in Erie (Mike already owned a townhome there so I just moved my stuff in right before the wedding) and got back into the swing of things by throwing Mike a “candy and video games” party for his 26th birthday.
In May we took a trip to visit the east coast—we went to DC and grabbed some of our friends there and took a bus up to NYC to visit some others (as well as our friend Tony who joined us from San Francisco). It was so much fun to get everyone together and check out NYC. We had never been there before and felt a bit like a country mouse in the city, but we absolutely loved it! While we were there we went to the top of Rockfeller Center and walked the streets—seeing Times Square, Wall St., and all the other famous New York sights. We returned to DC and spent a couple of days there before heading back. Overall it was a weekend to remember!
In June we spent some time at my dad and step-mother’s second home in Wyoming. While we were there we spent some time soaking up small town life in Saratoga, paying a visit to the local fish hatchery, and showing off our angling skills (well, mine anyway). I managed to catch two fish while sitting on the shore reading magazines, while Mike and my dad, all decked out in their fishing garb, didn’t have any luck standing waist-deep in the water in their waders—just goes to show that fishing is totally unpredictable!
Mike, our friend Beth, and I decided to take a road trip to Oregon in July. We visited our west coast friends Mariko and Colin and had a great time hanging out with them. We were there while the Olympic trials were going on, so we got to join in those festivities a little bit. We also went camping and did a great hike up to Monkey Face rock. Another of our friends, Jamila, met up with us while we were out there as well.
The DNC had Denver all a-buzz in August. While Mike never passes up an opportunity to indulge his inner introvert, I never pass up an opportunity to join in all the fun! Several friends of ours came out from DC to be a part of the convention, so while they were here we took a side trip to Breckenridge to celebrate my birthday. When we returned to Denver, I participated in several events, including a Young Democrats party, a free bowling event held at Lucky Strike lanes, and of course. . . the speech! I was lucky enough to be able to sit club level for Barack Obama’s acceptance speech and it was truly an amazing moment for me. Another highlight of the week was a close encounter with Hilary Clinton! I happened to be walking down the street with some friends when Hilary’s car pulled over, her secret service ushered us to the side, and she stepped out. Hilary stopped to chat with us for a minute before going inside. It was really cool to be that close to such a high-profile person. We all wrapped up the week by getting great seats to the CU-CSU game in the first and second rows on the 40 yard line. Even though the Rams were handed a crushing loss by the Buffs, we had a great time hanging out with our out-of-town friends one last time. (and Mike had a great time rubbing the loss in our faces while he proudly wore his black and gold)
Another fun part of our fall was our decision to join a kickball team! Well, actually Mike and I ended up as captains of the team, which we named Just for Kicks. We ended the season 4th out of 6 teams and had a blast meeting new people and displaying our kickball talents.
In September I made the difficult decision to leave my job with Pathways Church. Though I had been there for 2.5 years, I felt it was time for a change and that I was no longer the right person to take the Children’s Ministry to the next level. I accepted a position with MWH Constructors as a marketing writer. My office is located at Interlocken in Broomfield, so it’s closer to home. The job has been good so far, especially because I had worked with many of the people in the past, so it was an easy transition. The highlight has been the opportunity to travel and I’ve already gone on trips to San Francisco and Austin as part of the event planning aspect of the job. Mike is still with the Department of Defense and is very happy with his job, largely because he has wonderful co-workers with whom we both love spending time.
So, as you can see it’s been an exciting year full of travel, friends, and fun—our three favorite things! God has continued to richly bless our life together and we are looking forward to the new year! We hope and pray that God will pour many blessings on your family this year. Christmas in November
From Mike:
Well, it’s that time of year again; the weather is getting colder, the traffic is getting suckier, and the stores are getting busier. Suffice it to say, Kelly and I are as busy as ever gearing up for the holidays. I love this time of year. I always have. This is somewhat embarrassing, but I remember sitting in my room as a kid listening to Christmas music in July! I guess the fond memories and the joy that this season brings makes this my favorite time of year. Kelly, on the other hand, still can’t believe the radio stations are already playing Christmas music…she refuses to listen to it until December 1st. Although Kelly isn’t into the post-Halloween Christmas spirit, she is not totally without some yuletide cheer…she has already begun her shopping and bought Christmas cards! I realized something funny the other day as Kelly and I were writing our annual Christmas letter: Isn’t the Christmas letter just a blog on fancy paper that you mail to people? For those who already document their daily lives online for everyone to see, technology is ruining that particular part of this wonderful holiday! Oh well…everyone likes getting mail, right?
Kelly and I recently volunteered for The March of Dimes at their Signature Chefs event in Denver and Boulder. This is pretty much the coolest event to volunteer for, ever. Anywhere from 15 to 20 of the top restaurants in Denver and Boulder come to each event and make a variety of delicious gourmet food for the attendees. People pay $150/seat to attend, but since we are volunteers, we get everything for the price of a few hours of our time. It’s quite a trade-off. They also hold several silent auctions for goods and services donated from companies across the country. Everything from massages and golf clubs, to hockey tickets and Vegas vacations are available to bid on while you walk around the ballroom filling your belly with some of the most delightful dishes you can imagine. Suffice it to say, Kelly and I left with a full stomach, and a sense of satisfaction knowing we had helped premature babies across the country.
On a much darker, drearier note, Kelly and I went to the dentist last week for a cleaning. As usual, Kelly came out of there with a clean bill of health. I wasn’t so lucky. For those of you who don’t already know, I absolutely HATE going to the dentist. Recently, I haven’t left the dentist without a laundry list of expensive work that needs to be done to that stupid part of my face. This time, it was my wisdom teeth. Apparently I need them out since they are, in the dentist’s words, “all messed up.” He even told me that they were so impacted, that he didn’t even trust himself to take them out, so he referred me to a specialist. I read somewhere that your wisdom teeth are really close to a major nerve in your face, and if they accidentally sever that nerve while removing them, one entire side of your face could be paralyzed…forever!! How jacked up is that?? I don’t know about you all, but I like my face the way it is. Not to mention that people say it costs upwards of $3,000 to get them removed…*sigh*
This weekend, I’m going with my friend Ashley up to Jamestown with a group of high schoolers for a weekend mountain retreat. It’s been so long since I last worked with the youth group that I’m a little nervous, but at the same time, I’m excited to have the opportunity to be a spiritual mentor to them and help them grow in their walk with Christ. It will be a weekend of reflection and meditation as we spend quiet times surrounded by God’s amazing creation. Please be in prayer that these kids will walk away from the retreat with a renewed faith, and a deeper relationship with their Maker.
Kelly, for some reason, suggested that I write something about our cat, Zora. I sat here for the longest time trying to think of something interesting to write about our chubby little feline, but not a whole lot has happened with her…she’s as fat and lazy and mean as ever. Despite her oddities, we still love her.

Playing catch up. . .

Well not much is going on around here. And at the same time, it seems like a lot has happened!!
For Halloween Mike and I went to a few different parties. I was dressed as a bee and he went in a prisoner's costume, but for some reason kept telling people he was a "married man". Not sure what that was all about. . . :) We saw some pretty good costumes throughout the night-- lots of girls dressed as Sarah Palin, a John McCain, a girl dressed as Carrie that was actually really really scary, and our friend Justin wore skin tight shorts and went as Michael Phelps-- that actually may have been scarier than the Carrie costume!
Then, as you know, just one week ago the country elected BARACK OBAMA!!! YAY!!! We went to Carter's house to watch the election results with some friends and enjoyed watching the numbers roll in as we chowed down on some pizza and caught up. Of course we were very happy with the results and I was especially moved by Barack's speech. Regardless of your politics, this is such a huge leap from even just 50 years ago to see an African American family in the white house! What an historic moment. Which is why. . . we have decided to go to DC to join in the inauguration festivities!!
Since we have a bunch of friends that live out there anyway, we thought this would be great time to go visit and witness history in the making. Well actually, we probably won't get to see the actual history being made-- tickets are really hard to come by for the actual inauguration-- but we will sure have fun joining in the festivities! Mike is leaving on Tuesday, though, before the deed is done-- just to make it clear that he's still an independent ;) Plus, Tony's coming out from San Francisco to meet up with us so that's an added bonus!
Ok well Mike's done doing the dishes, so it's time to go beat him at Phase 10. Have a great rest of your week!!

Who’s ready for cold weather?
From Mike:
So, I was in Target the other day and was walking past the Halloween section of the store, and noticed that not only do they have their shelves stocked with an array of costumes and candy, but also Christmas lights and tree ornaments…that’s just ridiculous. Christmas is over two months away people! Let’s get one holiday over with, and then move on to the next one. Oh, and what happened to Thanksgiving?
For the past few weeks, I’ve been waking up at the usual time to go to work, except instead of being greeted by the bright, beautiful sunrise, I awaken to total darkness. Is anyone else a little distraught by this? Kelly was absolutely right when she told me yesterday that it is literally ungodly to wake up and get ready for work when the sun hasn’t even risen yet! If God intended us to be awake that early, He would have made the sun rise earlier! Along those lines, since the sun hasn’t even risen enough to heat the earth when I leave for work, I have had to scrape the frost off of my car for a week now…which is always very upsetting, and usually indicates the onset of winter. I’m definitely not ready for that.
Kelly came home from San Francisco yesterday and had all sort of stories about great food, gorgeous scenery, and fun times she had with one of my groomsmen, Tony, who is apparently “living the dream” out there.
I guess I should get back to work now…I have a riveting online acquisition class to take, and am looking forward to napping through 80% of it. ;) I hope you’re all doing well and are being blessed richly. Until next time!

City by the Sea
From Kelly:
Well, as I write I am sitting with my feet up in a big comfy chair, looking out over the bay bridge and San Francisco bay. There are sailboats, blue skies, and palm trees-- and someone is playing the violin. Boy, do I feel lucky to be here!
So far the trip has been pretty great. My boss (Misti) and I arrived yesterday, dropped our stuff off at the hotel and then went out to do a boat tour of Alcatraz Island. I had done the tour before, but it was still cool to see and to hear the stories I had since forgotten. The weather was gorgeous and the views from the island back to the city were beautiful. After the tour we had dinner at a restaurant right on the water and ate as we watched the sun set behind the golden gate bridge. It was very romantic. . . :) I'm so lucky to have a boss that I really do get along with. We have become great friends over the years (I worked with her before at another company, so I've known her about 4 years now) and so far we have been getting along really well on this adventure.
After dinner we came back to the hotel and I was ready to crash. However, our friend Tony lives here in the city and invited me out to have a drink with him. I decided I just couldn't resist checking out a little more of the city, so I ventured out-- and I was so glad I did. Tony, Michael (Tony's friend), and I had a great time talking and laughing at this cute little place by Tony's house. I even tried a new drink! Don't ask me what it was called, though it did involve egg whites.
Hanging out with the boys gave me a twinge of wanting to move to a different place and experience some new things. I wish Mike and I had the flexibility to be able to pick up and move, but then when I think of all our ties and I realize that's just not a possibility for us. We both have jobs that we really shouldn't leave, we have so much stuff we'd have to store/move, and we have a house that's just not sellable in this market. Still, I feel like the world keeps moving forward without me and that the glamourous life is somewhere else. I guess what I really need, though, is to just stop buying into the myth of the grass being greener on the other side.
Today Misti and I had breakfast in the hotel and then worked our booth. It was a pretty good time. I got a ton of freebies from the other exhibitors, so that was a bonus. I even got one of those cool aluminum water bottles. The guys sitting around us were pretty cool, too, and in our downtime we had fun joking around with them. Lunch was amazing. They had 5 different food stations and in the center was a chocolate and waffle station. I swear I'm bound to gain at least 10 pounds on this trip!
So, now I am trying to keep my eyes open just a little bit longer (staying out until 2 on a work night was just not one of my best ideas), and waiting to go to dinner with Tony this evening. I'm so anxious to get outside! It's so beautiful and people are out and about. Looks like fun!! I'm sure my energy will perk up once I get going.
Anyway, I hope you are all doing well that that your grass is plenty green where you are. Talk to you soon!
Well, as I write I am sitting with my feet up in a big comfy chair, looking out over the bay bridge and San Francisco bay. There are sailboats, blue skies, and palm trees-- and someone is playing the violin. Boy, do I feel lucky to be here!
So far the trip has been pretty great. My boss (Misti) and I arrived yesterday, dropped our stuff off at the hotel and then went out to do a boat tour of Alcatraz Island. I had done the tour before, but it was still cool to see and to hear the stories I had since forgotten. The weather was gorgeous and the views from the island back to the city were beautiful. After the tour we had dinner at a restaurant right on the water and ate as we watched the sun set behind the golden gate bridge. It was very romantic. . . :) I'm so lucky to have a boss that I really do get along with. We have become great friends over the years (I worked with her before at another company, so I've known her about 4 years now) and so far we have been getting along really well on this adventure.
After dinner we came back to the hotel and I was ready to crash. However, our friend Tony lives here in the city and invited me out to have a drink with him. Ah, Voting

From Mike: So, is anyone else torn between the two major presidential candidates this year? Sometimes I wish I was not unaffiliated so I could just vote straight ticket and be done with it.
Kelly and I received our mail ballots on Tuesday, so I was mulling over everything I’ve heard Senators Obama and McCain say during this seemingly endless election season and discovered that I agree with aspects of both party’s policies. I honestly have no idea who to vote for! I agree with McCain on the economy, abortion, gay marriage, and the power of the federal government, but I agree with Obama on the Global War on Terror, immigration, the environment, and that Governor Palin was the wrong choice. Also, I agree with McCain on healthcare reform, but I agree with Obama on the elimination of preexisting conditions. Not to mention the fact that Kelly would probably divorce me if I didn’t vote for Obama. Seriously, I think my brain has exploded trying to weigh the two candidates. Who would’ve thought that voting could be this difficult?? I mean, it’s not like I’m electing the leader of the free world or anything…
Okay, enough about that. Let’s move on to more important matters: Halloween. Kelly has decided to be a bee for Halloween. Initially, I was going to be a beekeeper, but then Kelly suggested that I be honey…hehe, nice double meaning, right? Yeah, well, that idea got scratched because Kelly later decided that it was too cutesy. So it’s back to being a beekeeper. Maybe I’ll put fake blood on my suit and be a dead beekeeper, because being a regular one just reminds me of myself in high school…minus the braces and the saxophone.
I like Halloween, and not just for the candy (even though last year someone told me that I was too old to trick-or-treat), but also for the pumpkin carving! Our friend Beth is having her annual pumpkin carving party where we all go out to the pumpkin patch to find that special orange globe of jack-o-lantern goodness and attempt to show off our artistic skills, or lack thereof. I’m glad the party is going to be a held a little closer to Halloween this year, because last year the trick-or-treaters that came to my house were greeted by a smelly rotten pile of mushy orange skin with an unintelligible pattern carved into the front of it. Although I was the only house whose pumpkin did not end up smashed in the middle of the street the next morning…
Kelly is leaving on a business trip to San Francisco this weekend and won’t be back until Wednesday. Although I am jealous that she’s going, it means that I can do pretty much whatever I want while she’s gone! I fully intend on temporarily reverting back to bachelorhood as I fill the weekend full of video games, football, and unhealthy eating. Kelly, being the wonderful, nurturing wife that she is, reminded me that there are carrots, celery, bananas, fish, chicken, salad, and healthy leftovers in the fridge, and that I have no excuse to eat pizza the whole time. Haha, it’s amazing how well she knows me. As much as she may not believe me when I say it, I am going to miss her SO much!!

Fall Hike
From Kelly:
Yesterday we went up to Estes to go on our annual fall hike! We were a bit concerned when we rolled into town to find ourselves in the middle of a rainstorm complete with lightening and all. But, we decided to try to wait it out by going downtown to do some shopping. We killed some time in the shops (I bought a cute little candleholder for Halloween). And then we got some ice cream. By then, the sun was out and it was 70 degrees again so we decided to head up.
The hike was 1.7 miles up to Gem Lake. Though there was a lot of elevation gain, it was a pretty good hike. We saw lots of gorgeous leaves, of course, and a some pretty cool rock formations as well. The lake was smaller than expected, but absolutely gorgeous and all in all it turned out to be a pretty awesome day!

Mike makes his second mark...
What's up everyone?
I guess it's my turn to relay the details of our busy lives to you all. Here goes:
For some reason, it feels like Kelly and I are busier than ever! Now that Kelly is working full time, it seems like our evenings are getting cut shorter and shorter as we both have to wake up early. Bedtime has been strictly enforced since Kelly likes to sleep and needs her full 8 hours...i'm usually partial to falling asleep at my desk, so I try to get at least 6 or 7 hours, but this 8 hours thing is great! I had no idea that staying awake at work was possible! :P
Kelly and I bought a three-month pass to the new Erie rec center at it's been a real motivation for me to get off my butt and work out once in awhile. I forgot what it's like to actually be "in shape," and i'm slowly working towards not passing out on the treadmill after 3 minutes of jogging. ;) Suffice it to say, we're both looking forward to getting and staying healthy!
Kelly and I went to Oktoberfest last Friday and met up with a few friends. We spent the evening drinking beer, eating funnel cakes (yum!) and chatting. The Rockies' last home game happened to be that night, so they put on a fireworks show that we got to watch. Then, this past Friday, I guess we didn't get enough "bier", so we went back to Oktoberfest. :P I broke down and bought a 44 oz. stein that will probably find its way into a box in the crawlspace later. ;)
I don't know if I mentioned this in my last post, but I recently became the treasurer on the board of directors of a start-up nonprofit organization. We plan to build Christian schools in Kenya, and all along the eastern coast of Africa. Obviously, we want to start small, so we're trying to raise money to build the first school in Kenya right now. Please be in prayer for our organization, Building on the Rock, as we continue to organize the corporation and plan our fundraising activities. Thanks friends!
I guess that's all for now. I'm sure I forgot to mention a lot of things, so i'll let Kelly fill in the gaps later. :) Have a great weekend!

Working Girl
Well I survived my first week of work and have even managed to come back for week two. . . Here's a little update on my return to the corporate world:
On Monday I arrived and had to watch a 40-minute training video on harrassment (what? I'm not allowed to whistle at guys when they walk by my cube?? Ridiculous! ) I then got oriented and had a bit of basic training (to write a new email I just have to click "compose mail". Facinating.) Things did improve around lunchtime, though, as they usually do. My boss, team leader, and a couple others took me to lunch at a mexican place. I love mexican food so this was a huge highlight.
On Tuesday, I had more training to do, but also attended a training meting at lunchtime. It was interesting to learn more about what MWH Constructors actually does. It was also nice to feel like I had a "real" meeting to attend-- filled with imformation that wasn't obvious.
On Wednesday things really perked up-- My team leader introduced me to the other team members who had been out the previous two days. There are 8 people on my team and a couple of the guys are my age, which is a huge plus because I was thinking that everyone I was working with would be way older and therefore harder to connect with. I also realized that I already knew about 5 people in the company pretty well, so that was encouraging too. It was funny though, because I'm not used to being in the business world and I was a little bit surprised when everyone I knew already shook my hand instead of giving me a hug when they saw me again :)
Also, my team leader told me about a trade show we will be attending in san francisco. MWH constructors won an award and so we basically just have to go out there and spend a couple hours a day manning a booth and talking to people about the company and then the final two days all we have to do is go to a $100/head cocktail party and then a $175/head dinner the next night. Black tie. I'm super excited, especially because our good friend Tony lives ou there so I'll have a chance to hang out with him! I love to travel so this was a huge perk for me! Then we had indian food for lunch with my boss and team leader. It was yummy. I think I might be addicted to Saag.
On Friday I had my first staff meeting. It was the first opportunity I had to spend time with my group, so that was a plus. We all went out to lunch afterward too and had some delicious sushi! I think I am going to get spoiled by all the free lunches I've been getting! I got to talk a little more with the guys here who are my age, so that was good. I found out that one of them lives at 19th and Pearl, so really cose to where I used to live/work, so that was pretty cool.
As far as actual work, I haven't had much. I've edited some tables, etc. But they are kind of in a lull around here, so I haven't been too busy. It will be nice when I get some work to occupy my time. . .
So, overall it was a pretty good first week. I think this job isn't going to be as bad as I thought it could be, especially because I'm going to be in charge of trade shows for our company, so that will involve some travel.

Just a quickie
From Kelly: Well after watching the Broncos defeat the Chargers by the skin of their teeth, it didn't seem quite right to just flip off the TV and get going on chores. So, I'll meander my way through a short blog.
Tomorrow I start my new job. You would think this would mean I was done with the old one, but not quite. I am still wrapping up a baby dedication that was scheduled for next week so today I had a meeting for that, and I taught the elementary class, and then next week I need to do the dedication on Sunday and finish up some paperwork. But THEN I will be totally done. That is going to be a strange strange feeling!
Mike is currently off saving the world. Well, someone's world at least. Daniel (his best friend)'s sister has a vision to build a school in Africa and in order to do this she needs to establish a non-profit and in order to do THAT, she has to have a board. So Mike has agreed to join the board and tonight is their first meeting. I think it's so great that he's been able to get involved with something related to helping other people and serving God in a tangible way, so I'm excited for him. And trying to keep my nose out of it at the same time-- letting it be his thing.
We have also been attending a new thing called Deepen that Pathways is putting on on Wednesday nights. It's a time of eating together, worship songs, a short teaching time, and then table discussions with a smaller group. There have been about 50 people in attendance, so it's a good size and I've really enjoyed the chance to do a Bible study again (not to mention the free dinner is a way bigger incentive than it should be). :)
Our friends have been living the high life lately: Heather and Daniel had their baby girl on Thursday. She is an absolute perfect combination of them-- Heather's nose and Daniel's chin. Totally adorable! I can't wait to see her grow. Also, Mariko and Colin just returned from Japan. They said it was hot but not sweltering and they got to see a wide variety of sights all around the country. What a cool trip!
Anyway, guilt is setting in and I'd better go check the laundry. . . Have a great week!!

Mike makes his mark on the blog
From Mike: What’s going on, party people? Alright, since Kelly started this blog, I figured I would inject some of my own personality into it and let you know some of the other things that have been going on in our lives lately. (and just so you know, I’m not writing this because Kelly has been bugging me to write something for a week now... honest!) ;)
Anyway, it’s been awhile since I have written a blog, so bear with me as I attempt to get back into the habit of sharing information with you that will undoubtedly bring me much criticism and embarrassment.
Kelly and I celebrated our six-month anniversary on September 1st! Of course, by “celebrate,” I really mean that she watched a movie while I fed my addiction to World of Warcraft… in completely separate rooms of the house. :P In all honesty, we both forgot that it was our anniversary until about half way through the day! Whoops! Now that is true love, my friends…
Did you know that you can re-live your childhood memories by joining an adult kickball league?? Well, Kelly and I started a team called “Just for Kicks” in the Mile High division of the World Adult Kickball Association! (and I thought those days of being the dorky shrimp who always got picked last for sports were behind me…) Anyway, it’s a ridiculously good time. We’re a little over half way through the season and we have a record of 2 wins, 4 losses. Our scrappy little team of amateurs may have a losing streak, but at least we can hold our own when we play flip-cup at the bar after each game! J
As for life on the home front, after much deliberation and several tiffs over chores, Kelly and I have decided to hire a housekeeper. I am excited about this for several reasons: first, because I suck at keeping up with my weekly chores; second, because I swear Kelly would divorce me if she noticed that the bathrooms weren’t getting cleaned every week; and third, because I’m just really, really lazy. :P Not that I’m counting on the housekeeper to ensure marital bliss, but it can’t hurt, right?
I’ve been noticing my waistline gradually expanding over the past few months…blame the desk job… Anyway, Kelly and I finally broke down and bought a pass to the new Erie rec center. We tried it out for the first time on Saturday and decided that it would be good for both of us to get back into a workout routine. So, as soon as this paralyzing soreness and tendonitis wears off, I’ll go back for a second workout. :P So look out friends! Maybe the next time you see me, I’ll be all beefy with 0% body fat! (or at least have the willpower to decline when you offer me food…)
I may be alone here, but who else is excited for football season??? I love football, and all the joy it brings. Not college football, mind you. No, I’m talking about Broncos football!! Speaking of which, did anyone watch the Broncos spank the Raiders last night? It may have been a boring game, but any game where the Blue and Orange can beat a team by almost four touchdowns is a great sight to see. Now we’re leading the AFC West! Super Bowl XLIII, here we come! :P

Anyway, it’s been awhile since I have written a blog, so bear with me as I attempt to get back into the habit of sharing information with you that will undoubtedly bring me much criticism and embarrassment.
Kelly and I celebrated our six-month anniversary on September 1st! Of course, by “celebrate,” I really mean that she watched a movie while I fed my addiction to World of Warcraft… in completely separate rooms of the house. :P In all honesty, we both forgot that it was our anniversary until about half way through the day! Whoops! Now that is true love, my friends…
Did you know that you can re-live your childhood memories by joining an adult kickball league?? Well, Kelly and I started a team called “Just for Kicks” in the Mile High division of the World Adult Kickball Association! (and I thought those days of being the dorky shrimp who always got picked last for sports were behind me…) Anyway, it’s a ridiculously good time. We’re a little over half way through the season and we have a record of 2 wins, 4 losses. Our scrappy little team of amateurs may have a losing streak, but at least we can hold our own when we play flip-cup at the bar after each game! J
As for life on the home front, after much deliberation and several tiffs over chores, Kelly and I have decided to hire a housekeeper. I am excited about this for several reasons: first, because I suck at keeping up with my weekly chores; second, because I swear Kelly would divorce me if she noticed that the bathrooms weren’t getting cleaned every week; and third, because I’m just really, really lazy. :P Not that I’m counting on the housekeeper to ensure marital bliss, but it can’t hurt, right?
I’ve been noticing my waistline gradually expanding over the past few months…blame the desk job… Anyway, Kelly and I finally broke down and bought a pass to the new Erie rec center. We tried it out for the first time on Saturday and decided that it would be good for both of us to get back into a workout routine. So, as soon as this paralyzing soreness and tendonitis wears off, I’ll go back for a second workout. :P So look out friends! Maybe the next time you see me, I’ll be all beefy with 0% body fat! (or at least have the willpower to decline when you offer me food…)
I may be alone here, but who else is excited for football season??? I love football, and all the joy it brings. Not college football, mind you. No, I’m talking about Broncos football!! Speaking of which, did anyone watch the Broncos spank the Raiders last night? It may have been a boring game, but any game where the Blue and Orange can beat a team by almost four touchdowns is a great sight to see. Now we’re leading the AFC West! Super Bowl XLIII, here we come! :P

The whole job "thing"

Well, since I created a buzz about the job thing and have generated more questions (sent to me via email) than I seem to have answered, I think I need to do some 'splaining.
So, I thought back in June that it was time for me to leave Pathways. I just wasn't feeling like I was the right person for the job anymore and was pretty burnt out on various aspects of the job, such as working every Sunday and having volunteers cancel on me at the last minute. Mike and I were also kind of longing for a church that was a little closer to home, so we could meet some people nearby.
I got up the nerve in early July to tell my boss that I quit. Well, he wasn't too happy about that and we worked out a plan where I would stay and we would hire a friend of mine to do Sundays and volunteers, since those were the two areas that were stressing me out. So, we did that. Katey started a couple of weeks ago and I was happy with my job again, even getting to do some communication things, which I was really liking.
But then. . . An old co-worker contacted me whom I have done some freelance work for in the past. She is at an environmental engineering company called MWH and they needed someone in her department. Now, she has asked me to come work there before and I have always said no. I had no desire to get back into the 80-hour work weeks and stressful culture I was in at my job before Pathways. But, she was relentless, so I told her I'd at least come in for an interview.
At the interview I met my potential boss, whom I really liked. She told me more about the job and it didn't sound too bad-- very little overtime (which can be made up as comp hours), a chance to work on a variety of marketing materials, some event planning for trade shows, some travel, bonuses, and some work on a new business line they are starting to develop involving biofuels. So, they basically offered me the job right then and fedexed the offer sheet overnight for saturday delivery in this really spiffy leatherbound portfolio. I was even more enticed when I found out they had offered me the top salary available for the position.
After giving it a lot of thought, Mike and I realized that if I take this job (which pays a LOT more), we would be able to pay off all of my debt that is still lingering on credit cards and student loans very quickly. This is a huge deal since we'd like to have kids in a few years and really don't want to be making debt payments when that happens (kids are expensive enough). Plus, this job will give us an opportunity to look around for a church near us where we can both feel at home and where we can hopefully meet some people nearer us. Also this job is much closer to home, which will save on car wear. So, overall it was kind of a financial decision to make the move.
I am pretty bummed to leave pathways when it comes down to it. I am going to miss my coworkers and the families I work with so much. I am also definitely going to miss the flexible hours. I am so nervous I won't even be ABLE to work normal hours again. . . I am also kind of stressed about when the heck I am going to get things done, like going to the dry cleaners or the post office. But, many people do that, so I'm sure it will be fine.
I'm also sad to leave because I have put so much energy into building the children's program at Uptown. I know everything there is to know about what happens there and I'm nervous that things won't go as smoothly when I turn it over to someone new. And I'm also bummed to be giving up some new things we have started recently that seem to be going really well. I hope the ball doesn't drop on those things.
But, I just keep thinking that this feels like the right thing to do and that by stepping out of my position I'm giving someone else a chance to thrive in it. I feel like this is what God is leading me to do, so all I have to be willing to do at this point is follow. . .

We suck at keeping in touch. . .
Which is why we ("we" being Kelly, Mike will find out when he gets home from work) have decided to start ourselves a blog! No promises about how often we'll get a chance to post, but something is better than nothing, eh?
These last couple of weeks have been absolutely nutty. Starting with my birthday, I feel like we've been spinning out of control. Since I know I would burn myself out on this whole blogging thing right from the start if I went into a lot of details, here are the overviews:
-- I had FOUR great birthday celebrations (birthdays are a huge deal for only children). First, we had a family celebration at Rock Bottom, then on the actual day we went to the Rio with a bunch of friends, Friday I had a co-celebration with my mom at Cheesecake Factory (which was not busy at all even though it was a Friday night. I couldn't believe it! I think it's because it was right before the DNC and people were afraid of downtown), and on Saturday night we rented a condo in the mountains with 8 other people. It was so fun to enjoy the mountains with my closest friends, especially because they were all still adjusting to the altitude :)
-- Six friends of mine were in town for the DNC, which was awesome. I love hanging out with those friends from college that I miss so much, though it almost makes me miss them more when they leave. We basically did something together every night, and I was working, which left me feeling very full on my extrovert meter. Luckily Mike got to stay home a few of the nights to re-charge his introvert meter :)
-- On Thursday afternoon, I was walking down 17th street and Hillary Clinton pulled up! She got out of the car and stood about 5 feet from us and talked for a minute. It was REALLY cool! I'm not much of a Hillary fan, but it's still cool to run into a celeb like that! Also on Thursday I ended up with passes to see Barack's speech. I even got to sit club level! What a huge treat! Barack is so inspiring to me. I especially liked the way he was kind and supportive of McCain and talked about how much he knows McCain loves our country. I thought his behavior was a lot more respectable than some of the meanness that is coming out of some Republican mouths lately.
-- On Friday, I interviewed for a job that coworker had randomly called to offer me. It is a job in the marketing department of an international environmental engineering company. I have decided to accept the job. It will be great experience in all aspects of marketing, I'll be travelling some, I'll be doing some event planning, and there is talk that they want to make me senior level next year. So, overall it's a great opportunity for us to pay off my debts and for us to save up some money for a couple of years. I am not looking forward to getting back into the 9-5 grind again, though!
-- Sunday was the CU-CSU game. We grilled up Buff burgers and then sat in the second row on the 30 yard line. Our seats were pretty incredible. Too bad the Rams couldn't pull off a win. Now I'm stuck doing all of Mike's chores for a week. . .
